Positive OPK

When you have a successful ovulation test following the advice of a fertility calculator, it means you are ovulating or getting ready to ovulate right away! That means that you need to have intercourse somewhere within around 24 hours after getting that positive test to make sure that you don’t miss the time frame where you are ovulating. Have sex right away to maximize your chances of becoming pregnant. If you wait too long, you will miss your chance and you will have to wait another month.

Now what?

After you have sex, you probably want to run right out and take a pregnancy test right away. While that is normal, it is not always the best option. This is because it will take awhile for your body to create and build up enough hCG to be detected by a pregnancy test. If you test before your body has a chance to build up enough hCG to be detected, you will just be wasting your money and your time, and making yourself even more frustrated.

How long?

So, how long are you going to have to wait? Well, you are probably not going to like the answer! Most doctors and experts suggest that you wait until you are supposed to start your period before taking a home pregnancy test. This is usually right around two weeks. This waiting period between when you have sex and when you await the start of your period, is commonly known as the “two week wait”. This wait can be very difficult but just keep in mind that the longer you wait, the more likely it is that your test will be accurate.

If you can’t wait

Of course, there is no “rule” stating that you have to wait two weeks before testing. The longer you wait to test, the more likely it will be that your test results are accurate. If you just can’t wait, however, you could take a test every day or every other day until your period is due, to see if your body has built up enough hCG to be detected by a home pregnancy test. This can get expensive though, and can be nerve-wracking as well. If you are not able to wait, you can also try to buy a pregnancy test that is more sensitive. There are a ton of pregnancy tests out there that are marketed to be “more sensitive” than others, but remember that the only true way to know for sure is to wait until your period is late to test. Happy testing!
