What Is An hCG Injection?

When a woman is planning to undergo IUI fertility treatments, sometimes her doctor will monitor her and wait until she is ready to ovulate on her own to gather the mature eggs for fertilization. However, other times, an hCG injection will be given to trigger the woman’s ovulation, making it the perfect time for the eggs to be retrieved, fertilized and then to be implanted. HCG injections are especially helpful for women who have irregular ovulation cycles and might not know when they will ovulate next. So, how do hCG injections work? How Do hCG Injections Work?

An injection of hCG can sometimes really help the body along in terms of ovulation and fertility. When an hCG injection is given, it causes the mature egg follicles that are in the ovary to finish maturing and be released.

The doctor will monitor the woman until it is clear that her egg follicles are mature enough to be released, and this is when the hCG injection will be given. The injection doesn’t hurt, and there is no anesthesia or anything like that given. Some women experience some swelling or pain at the injection site the next day, but nothing too major.

How Long Until Ovulation?

After an hCG injection is given, ovulation soon follows. Ovulation usually occurs within 36 hours after an hCG injection is given. Sometimes ovulation will happen as quickly as 24 hours after injection, and it can happen as long as 48 hours after injection. Because there is no exact time frame as to when ovulation will occur, the day of a woman’s injection and the two days following her injection are very important.

Your doctor can actually do an ultrasound to take a look at your follicles and see how big they are and how fast they are growing, and can give you a better idea of when you will ovulate after your injection. It’s also good to be familiar with how ovulation works, and to look for the signs of ovulation on your own to better familiarize yourself with your body and its processes.

What To Remember

A very important thing to remember about hCG injections… they can really interfere with pregnancy test results. Since hCG is the hormone that is detected by home pregnancy tests, if you take a pregnancy test before the hCG from the injection is out of your system, you can get a positive on a pregnancy test when you are not really pregnant.

This two week wait until your body gets rid of all of the hCG from the injection, and starts to produce hCG of it’s own (if you are pregnant, that is), can be really hard, but it’s important that you wait two weeks so you can make sure that you get a positive result.
