The basics of pregnancy

First of all, you should know the basics of pregnancy. Pregnancy lasts for forty weeks, give or take two weeks, usually. You may already know about the trimesters in pregnancy. There are three trimesters and the changes in each trimester are different. The first trimester or early pregnancy lasts from the day of conception to the thirteenth week. The second trimester starts with week fourteen and lasts until week twenty-six. The third trimester begins the following week and lasts until the end.

Different types of pregnancies

Once you grasp the basics of pregnancy, you should learn about the different types of pregnancies. Yes, pregnancies are each different and they are usually classified based on the risks associated or based on the number of fetuses. Single pregnancy means your partner is pregnant with one child. Multiple pregnancy means she is either carrying twins or multiples. There are also high-risk pregnancies that you should know about. Pregnancies are classified as high-risk when the mother or the unborn child has a few severe health concerns. Congenital defect in the fetus is one such example.

Pregnancy Symptoms

It is crucial that you know of the symptoms your partner will go through during pregnancy. The symptoms will change with the trimester or the stage of pregnancy. If you are aware of these symptoms, you will be able to handle the situation well and there won’t be any surprises or catch 22 situations. During the early stages of pregnancy, morning sickness is very common. Other symptoms throughout pregnancy include increased urination, fatigue, itchiness in the abdomen, and severe back pain. These symptoms are common and you don’t need to fret. If you notice danger signs such as sharp pains in the abdomen, abdominal cramping, and vaginal bleeding, you should take your partner to the hospital because all these symptoms spell trouble.

Support her

As mentioned a couple of times, it is important for you to support your partner throughout the pregnancy. Hormonal changes can take a toll on your partner and she will experience serious mood swings. One minute you will find her happy and the next minute you will find her crying. Similarly, one minute she may be calm and the next minute she may be angry. When she nears the end of her pregnancy, she may get really moody and cranky. She may start blaming you for her misery but you shouldn’t take all this to heart. Remember that she is going through a lot and she doesn’t mean all those things she says to you. Her hormones make her say all that you shouldn’t take them personally.

Possible complications

All pregnancies are not easy. Your partner may suffer with a few complications such as gestational diabetes and high blood pressure. You should be supportive at all times because under some circumstances she may not even be able to move from her bed. Help her follow the prescribed diet so that she eats well and her pregnancy is smooth.

There is no solace greater than the support from the one you love.
