Trying to Conceive Second Child

Around fifteen percent of all the couples apparently have secondary infertility issues, meaning they are having trouble getting pregnant after already having a child or two.

Secondary infertility

If you were able to conceive with ease the first time around but are facing problems conceiving again, you may be suffering from secondary infertility. This can be shocking but it is true that secondary infertility also occurs. Around fifteen percent of all the couples apparently have secondary infertility issues. Thus, if you are having a problem getting pregnant for the second time, you should see your doctor to find out why. Know the problem of secondary infertility is just as bad as primary infertility. Causes of secondary infertility

Most of the causes behind secondary infertility are the same as those of primary infertility. Some of these include irregular ovulation, declining ovarian function, damaged fallopian tubes, or blocked fallopian tubes, low sperm motility, low sperm count, and so on. Most of these are because of one huge factor: age.

The effect of age

With increase in age, fertility comes down. May be when you first got pregnant you were in your early thirties and now when you are trying to get pregnant, you have crossed the age of 35. Remember that it gets difficult to get pregnant after 35. These problems may also occur because of lifestyle changes. Maybe you started smoking or drinking after your first pregnancy? Maybe you started eating all the wrong foods? Maybe your husband started smoking or drinking? Maybe you put on too much weight after your first pregnancy? All these can cause secondary infertility.

Are you breastfeeding first child?

Before panicking and ringing alarm bells, there are things that you should ask yourself about your pregnancy. Are you still breastfeeding your first child? Has your menstrual cycle not returned yet? Then you will not get pregnant no matter how hard you try. Your menstrual cycle should have returned for you to get pregnant. Weaning your baby instead of breastfeeding will also help your chances.

Time intercourse

Time your intercourse on your most fertile days. Have lots of sex but you should also know when to have sex. Intercourse a couple of days before ovulation and during ovulation is ideal. You can buy ovulation kits to determine when you are ovulating so that your timing is right.

Improve your lifestyle

At the same time you should work to improve your lifestyle. Keep away from drugs and tobacco essentially. Eat well and get good sleep. Moderate exercise will also help you keep fit and increase your fertility. You should also monitor your weight. Too little weight is just as bad as too much weight. Your BMI should be in the normal range. If you are overweight or underweight, working to bring the weight to normal could increase your chances of getting pregnant. Also, talk to your doctor about your concerns and follow her advice.

Age matters

If you are younger than 35 years of age and have not been able to get pregnant even after trying for a year, you need help. Similarly, if you are older than 35 years of age and have not been able to get pregnant even after trying for six months, you need help. The doctor will perform fertility tests on you and your partner to find out the cause. She will recommend options based on the results.
