In a study done by the Harvard School of Public Health, researchers found that women who had ovulation related fertility problems often consumed more trans fats than women who did not have fertility issues. It didn’t take much trans fat to make a difference either!
The study showed that consuming just 2 percent of fats from trans fats instead of mono saturated fats, caused the risk of ovulation related fertility problems to double! Even worse? When carbs were replaced with trans fats, the risk went up by as much as 73 percent!
Of course, this is only one study, and much more research and follow up studies will be needed to make certain that these findings are accurate, but this news is very disturbing! It shows that trans fats might be even more dangerous than we previously thought, and perhaps women who want to get pregnant need to be sure to cut them out completely!
In case you need a refresher in what exactly trans fats are, they are liquid oils that go through hydrogenation, which is a chemically altering process that makes them more “solid” and more “shelf stable.” Trans fats help to extend the shelf life of products. They are most often found in fast foods and junk foods. Donuts, candy bars, crackers, cookies, and chips often have the biggest concentration of trans fats.
