Stork Parking is much of recent phenomena, something that wasn’t around when we were growing up, and seems to have sprung out of nowhere. Stork Parking refers to special, front parking places designated for pregnant women, much like handicapped parking. The idea is that pregnant women could use the closer parking space. The trend was started by Babies R Us, but now extends to several other retailers as well. Some stores that offer Stork Parking include various malls, Target, Kmart, Walmart, Home Depot and some other big box stores, depending on the area that you live in.
Some towns offer no Stork Parking at all, while others offer it at just about every store. But, would you believe, something as innocent as a closer parking spot for pregnant ladies has gotten the whole online world (and beyond!) worked into a tizzy? That’s right, the web is full of Anti Stork Parking proponents, who are fully and totally against the “special spaces”. Read on for more on both sides of the story.
Folks who are against Stork Parking say that pregnancy is a natural process, and that pregnant women don’t require any “special treatment.” They say that pregnant women have been trekking it across parking lots for years, and they’ve been fine up until now.
While these folks agree that yes, sometimes pregnancy is uncomfortable, they argue that there are many other conditions that are uncomfortable as well. What about folks with cancer? Think they are uncomfortable too? What about other conditions?
Arthritis is pretty dang uncomfortable, even sunburns can make walking through a parking lot seem like hell. Heck, there have been times that I have just had a simple cold that I was completely miserable. The point is, pregnancy can be uncomfortable, true, but there are lots of other things that are uncomfortable in life too!
Folks who don’t like Stork Parking argue that the spaces could be better utilized by parents of babies and young children, who might benefit from having less of a walk through a crowded parking lot. We all know that parking lots can be dangerous places for kids, so this makes sense. Still others argue that NO ONE should get special treatment in a parking lot, and all spaces should be marked the same.
However, on the other side of the fence, many folks think that stork parking is a good thing. First of all, if the stork parking is at a store like Babies R Us, which specializes in baby supplies, many women think it’s nothing more than a cute touch, an extension of the special shopping experiences of a pregnant woman.
Something you can enjoy and take advantage of during a few short months of your life, and then move on. Many people think that Stork Parking is just a fun, cute way of celebrating pregnancy, one of the “little perks” that go along with a special time in a woman’s life.
Personally, I don’t think that parking a couple of spaces over is going to kill anyone, so why not let the pregnant woman enjoy herself a little bit. I mean, pregnancy isn’t permanent, so why not just enjoy it for the short time it’s here?
If you have ever been a nine months pregnant mama waddling through a hot parking lot (or even worse, an ice and snow covered parking lot!), you can probably agree that Stork Parking is a nice touch at the stores that offer it. However, it is impossible to make everyone happy, and some people will continue to be against stork parking no matter what. What about you? Is stork parking offered where you live? How do you feel about it?
