What Is The Breastfeeding Guinness World Record? Answer: 14,536

A New World Record

Talk about a unique world record attempt! Saturday, August 3, 2013, breastfeeding moms all around the world got together for “The Big Latch On“, attempting to break the world record for the most women simultaneously. And break that record they did! Last year, a total of 8,862 babies latched on during that single minute (between 10:30 and 10:31 AM), but this year’s total was nearly double that! So, how many moms and babies latched on this year? A grand total of 14,536!!! Claim Your 20 Free Pregnancy Tests – Click Here

More Than A Record

While the whole world record of women breastfeeding thing might sound sort of silly, and it is, the purpose behind the Big Latch On is actually more serious. The point is to promote breastfeeding, and raise awareness for breastfeeding, which is still not as widely accepted and received as it should be. Breastfeeding should be normalized, but often, nursing mothers feel alone, and sometimes a little “weird”. The Big Latch On hopes to promote breastfeeding, put it at the forefront of everyone’s minds, and make sure that everyone is informed about it and at least considers it for their babies.

On The Rise

While breastfeeding isn’t as widely accepted as it should be, studies show that it is consistently and steadily growing in popularity. The United States Center For Disease Control now reports that 76 percent of babies are breastfed at birth. However, that number drops dramatically during the first year of a baby’s life. Only 49 percent of babies are still being breastfed at six months of age, and only 27 percent after one year. Organizations like the Big Latch On want to see those numbers rise, not just for the number of moms who are breastfeeding at birth, but for the number of moms who are breastfeeding throughout the first year of life and beyond.

Overcoming The Hurdles

Much of the time, breastfeeding moms might feel a little bit ostracized, or a little bit left out. Most moms can only name a handful (of fewer) of other breastfeeding moms that they know! There are also sometimes a lot of hurdles that moms have to deal with when it comes to breastfeeding. Sometimes there are issues (either with mom or baby) that mean that breastfeeding can’t happen for some women, or that breastfeeding is exceptionally hard. However, The Big Latch On wants to raise awareness for breastfeeding in general, and also support for women who have trouble breastfeeding.

World Breastfeeding Week

It’s no coincidence that The Big Latch On is held during World Breastfeeding Week, August 1st through the 7 every single year. World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated by 120 countries worldwide, all working together to increase breastfeeding awareness, and improve the health of babies around the world. If you didn’t get to participate, don’t worry! The Big Latch on says they’ll do it all again next year!
