Mobile Phones and Men’s Fertility

Cell Phones Cause Slower Sperm

Cell phones causing male infertility? We know, it sounds far fetched, but experts say it could be true! Believe it or not, researchers have found that men who keep their cell phones in their pockets, or attached to their hips, could be potentially damaging their sperm with the radio-frequency electromagnetic waves being so close to their testicles. Studies have shown that men who keep their cell phones close to their testicles have slower sperm, sperm with abnormalities, and decreased sperm concentration. These sperm also had a harder time attaching to the egg. Even more alarming? The number of sperm abnormalities increased the more time a guy spent on his cell phone.

The Research

Scientists took this study to the lab, and put sperm in lab dishes to be tested. They exposed the lab sperm to one hour of cell phone radiation each day. The sperm exposed to the radiation had more abnormalities than regular sperm, confirming what the researchers thought.

The research studies found that the damage was the same whether or not the phone was turned on near a man’s pocket (think using bluetooth) or turned off. The frequencies were the same, and the damage to the sperm was the same.

The Correlation

This link between cell phone usage and lower sperm counts is really a big deal, even though it isn’t talked about very much. The truth is, the rest of the world is getting more fertile, while the USA is getting less fertile. Could this link between cell phone EMF’s and sperm count be part of the problem?

While it needs mentioning that the studies have not shown that cell phone radio-frequency electromagnetic waves can cause complete infertility in men, or that they are related to testicular cancer or anything like that. The sperm are just slower, and some of them are not as healthy as others. Slow sperm can still create a baby, it just might be a little harder.

What To Do

While cell phones are the norm these days, and people who don’t have them are the minority, that doesn’t always mean that they are safe. We should perhaps take a few steps to limit our use of cell phones, but that is not very logical in this day and age, is it?

At the very least, guys should try to keep their phones out of their pockets and away from their man parts! By keeping the phone out of the front pockets, maybe guys can at least limit or reduce the damage that cell phone radio frequency electromagnetic waves can cause.
