Oral Medications

Oral medications such as Clomid and Serophene are extremely popular for many reasons. They are taken orally and are easy to manage. The side effects of these medications are minimal and they are usually very affordable, even without insurance. These medicines induce ovulation, which means they trick your body into producing more eggs.

This makes it easier to get pregnant. These medicines are usually taken for five days a month at the beginning of your cycle. They can be taken for up to six cycles and are usually very well tolerated. The side effects are usually like the symptoms of pregnancy, including fatigue, headache, nausea and dizziness.

Injection Medications

Known as gonadotropins, these medications are injections that are given to women who are experiencing infertility. If you tried oral medications and they did not work, usually you will be given injections next. The success rate is usually higher than oral medications, but so is the price tag. You will start the shots three days into your cycle and continue to get them through days seven or twelve.

When your eggs are mature, you will be given an HCG injection that will stimulate ovulation within 24 to 36 hours. You have to be ready to try to conceive at that time. You should note that along with the increased price tag, injection medications have more side effects and also an increased chance of multiple births.

These are the two main types of fertility medications on the market right now. This is not to say that new research is not being done every day and we are getting closer to having more choices available for couples who need fertility treatments. This is an ever changing field and we will be keeping up to date with the latest research.
