For men, they continue to produce sperm throughout the duration of their lives, and it really doesn’t lose any concentration.

Male biological clocks

As women, we know all too well about biological clocks, and the race against time to have a baby before it’s too late. It’s easy to get caught up in worrying about your own biological clock, and forget all about the biological clock of your partner. Yes, that’s right- guys have biological clocks too. It can be hard to remember this sometimes, since men can father children well up into their 70’s, sometimes even longer! However, it’s true, men do in fact have a biological clock! The time it takes

One of the biggest things to consider when it comes to male fertility is that the older a man is, the longer it can take for the female partner to get pregnant. In fact, the medical journal “Fertility and Sterility” published a study of 2000 women. The women whose partners were age 45 and older took five times longer to conceive than women whose partners were age 25 or younger. As for women who were under age 25 and had babies with men who were over 45? It took them four times as long to conceive as women whose partners were 25 or younger. This goes to show that even when a woman is at the prime of her fertility, the man’s age really did affect the time it took to conceive.

The male clock ticks

As women get older, we know that our finite number of eggs are running out. When they are gone, they’re gone. As we age, our best eggs get used up first, and as we get older, we are left with the abnormal or less than prime eggs. For men, that’s not the way it works. They continue to produce sperm throughout the duration of their lives, and it really doesn’t lose any concentration. However, as men get older, their bodies see a decline in testosterone. So, while the male body continues to make sperm well into old age, the sperm is not always good quality sperm. Men have to deal with declining sperm count, sperm motility and sperm quality as they age.

What problems can this cause?

There are other problems too. Men who have children when they are older, have a greater risk of having children with health problems and complications as well. Recent studies have shown that conditions like Down Syndrome and schizophrenia, as well as more rare conditions like dwarfism are in some ways related to paternal age. When both parents are 35, the risk is the highest.

Any hope for prevention?

So, is there anything that guys can do to preserve their sperm as they age? Surprisingly, one of the most important things that they can do is keep their weight at a healthy level. This is because a man’s weight is directly correlated to his testosterone levels. Of course, eating a healthy diet, staying away from drugs and living a healthy life is also a great plan for maintaining healthy sperm levels. Just remember that a woman isn’t the only one who has to worry about their biological clock ticking.
