Getting Pregnant With Donor Gametes

Getting Pregnant With Donor Gametes

A donor gamete refers to the donation of either an egg or sperm. For some couples, donor gametes can be a great choice for help getting pregnant. Sometimes using a donor egg or sperm from a sperm bank can be just what a couple needs to give them a boost in conceiving. Here are some things to remember when thinking of using donor sperm or eggs. Donor gametes are expensive

Donor gametes are usually the most expensive form of fertility treatment on the market. They are more invasive and time consuming than most of the other treatment methods out there. This makes them more expensive. Most donor egg or donor sperm treatments run somewhere in the area of $20,000 or more.

Donor gametes are usually a last resort

Not that there is anything wrong with them, or anything like that. It is just that for most couples, using a donor egg or donor sperm comes at the end of their fertility journey. Most fertility doctors like to try other, less invasive and expensive treatment options first. The majority of women that need fertility treatments will respond well to treatments like Clomid rather than using donor eggs or sperm, so they are usually left as a “last resort” type of option.

Good choice for certain cases

Sometimes donor gametes might be a good choice for a couple right off the bat. There are several conditions that might make a woman a good candidate for donor eggs or sperm. One of those conditions is premature ovarian failure, or menopause that starts much earlier than it is supposed to.

Diminished Ovarian Reserve is another condition that a doctor might recommend donor gametes for. Sometimes, if a mother has a genetic disease that could be transferred to her child, donor gametes might be a good choice in order to avoid passing the condition on.

Donor gamete processes are not that complicated

Many people have an idea in their minds that using donor sperm or eggs is a very intense and complicated process. That is just simply not the case. The process of using donor sperm or eggs is actually quite similar to a normal IVF procedure. There are not that many differences in the actual procedures themselves, only where the gametes are coming from.

Donor gametes do not make you “less” of a parent

Some people believe that couples that get pregnant using donor sperm or eggs are not “as much” of a parent as someone who gets pregnant with their own sperm or egg. That could not be further from the truth. Couples who use donor gametes are every bit as important as parents. They ARE the “real” parents of the child, no matter whose sperm or egg is used.
