That is exactly what she is doing in her forthcoming book: “Expecting Better: Why the Conventional Pregnancy Wisdom Is Wrong — and What You Really Need to Know“. Let’s just say, Emily’s new rules for pregnancy are taking the maternity ward by storm, and causing moms and moms to be everywhere to take note!
Emily has been researching for this book for a long time, combing through hundreds, possibly even thousands of medical studies, looking for correlations telling us that what we previously thought about pregnancy just might not be true. Emily’s new book sets out to give women the scientific data that their doctors might not always offer them, and in turn asks them to make the informed decisions about their pregnancy for themselves.
Emily Oster says that she was blown away and surprised by many of the things that she learned during her research. For the most part, Emily says that women should actually feel more relaxed about pregnancy, and focus less on the thought that every single thing they do, eat, think, feel or say is going to be a detriment to their pregnancy in some way.
One of the most surprising things Emily Oster says that she found out through her research? Emily came to the conclusion that light drinking through the entire duration of pregnancy has no negative effect on the baby. She also believes that their is no problem with light caffeine consumption during pregnancy as well.
Emily says that she hopes that women will take away from her book, the fact that what we THINK we know about pregnancy might not actually be accurate. One age old pregnancy fact that Oster does agree with? No smoking during pregnancy. “If you have to give up one thing, it should be smoking,” she said.
There are many aspects of pregnancy that you can budge on, such as which foods to eat, how much weight you can gain, the medicines you can take during pregnancy, etc. but even Oster agrees that smoking during pregnancy is one of the worst things that a woman can do. If it is also one of the common fertility facts when one is trying to get pregnant, how much more now that you are carrying your little one.
