PCOS affects many women and can impair their ability to have children. As many as one in ten women of childbearing age are affected with this disorder. These androgens counteract the estrogen (female hormones) in the body, and make it hard for the female reproductive system to work properly. PCOS can keep women from ovulating, keep them from menstruating, and can make it very hard for them to get pregnant, and hard to stay pregnant as well.
However, some experts claim that they have found a way to naturally restore menstrual cycles in women with PCOS? The answer is as close as your kitchen cabinet, and it may surprise you! It’s plain old cinnamon.
The study was presented at the joint conference of the International Federation of Fertility Societies (IFFS) and American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) a few weeks ago, and claims that the simple, everyday household spice cinnamon may be helpful in restoring menstruation in women with PCOS.
The study was conducted at Columbia University in New York City, and studied the data of 45 different women who all suffered from PCOS. Over the course of six months, the women were divided into two groups. One group was given cinnamon supplements, and the other group received a placebo.
The women who took the cinnamon reported more regular periods than the women in the placebo group. On average, the women in the cinnamon group reported between 3 and 4 regular periods during the 6 month period, and the women in the placebo group had between 2 and 3 menstrual cycles. Another really exciting development: two natural pregnancies were reported from the cinnamon supplement group during the six month period!
While this study was conducted with just a small group of women, it bodes well for the fact that maybe cinnamon could be a helpful treatment option for PCOS. Women will most likely prefer a natural treatment method like cinnamon supplements over an expensive prescription medication.
There have been several other studies regarding cinnamon in women with PCOS. Some studies have shown indications that cinnamon could possibly help women with PCOS to develop reductions in insulin resistance.
Another study found that women who took cinnamon supplements lost weight, which can definitely help with PCOS symptoms as well. There is still much more research to be done on this subject, and many more larger studies will have to be done, but the results do look promising!
