Think about it this way: an hour on the treadmill can burn you 500 calories, or you can hang out and feed your baby and burn the same amount. Which one would you choose?

Fact or Myth?

It has long been a rumor that breast feeding helps new moms to lose weight fast. In fact, it is sometimes an important part of the reason that some moms choose to breastfeed their babies. But, is it truth or a myth? Does breastfeeding really help you to ditch the pounds after giving birth? Read on for the real inside scoop! Claim Your 20 Free Pregnancy Tests – Click Here

The Math of it All

Producing breast milk is serious business. Just the act of producing the breast milk requires between 300 and 500 calories from the mother. So, if you’re going by the math, breastfeeding in and of itself does burn calories. If you are eating right on top of breastfeeding, you are almost positive to lose weight faster than if you were not breastfeeding.

The Stipulations

Of course, there is a catch. If you are breastfeeding but still eating an unhealthy diet, or overeating, you are probably not going to lose weight. If you are laying on the couch snacking all day, breastfeeding probably isn’t going to give you that much of a boost in the weight loss department. However, if you are being active, eating right, and living a healthy lifestyle while breastfeeding, you are definitely going to see a boost in your weight loss.

The Science

Breastfeeding is technically the “final” stage of labor. During breastfeeding your body will release a hormone known as oxytocin, which helps your uterus to shrink and contract, and also makes your belly look flatter. The good news? Breastfeeding won’t shrink your boobs like normal diet and exercise will! Plus, the bonding you will get with your baby is just an added bonus! There have even been studies that show that women who breast feed have lower body weight on down the line, even after their babies have stopped breastfeeding. The reason isn’t clear, but it is definitely promising!

All Positives

Honestly, if you are able to breastfeed, you should. The positive effects of breastfeeding are overwhelming. Breast milk is healthiest for your baby. It is cheaper than store bought formula and breastfeeding will save you a ton of cash! It will also give you a chance to bond with your baby. Plus, breastfeeding can help you knock off that baby weight even faster. Think about it this way: an hour on the treadmill can burn you 500 calories, or you can hang out and feed your baby and burn the same amount. Which one would you choose?
