A new study

A brand new study by the European Respiratory Journal has shown that women who have asthma might potentially have a harder time getting pregnant. The study took 15,000 women and surveyed them about how long it took them to get pregnant.

When asked if it took them over a year to get pregnant, 21% of women without the condition said yes. However, 27% of women with asthma took over a year to get pregnant, which is a much higher percentage.

Why is this true?

Doctors have a few theories as to why asthma might affect the ability to conceive, but they are not for sure yet. Much more research will need to be done on the subject before doctors can say for sure. However, one theory is that women who suffer from asthma spend more time feeling ill, and therefore are probably not wanting to have sex as much.

Another theory is that the inflammation that asthma causes to the respiratory system might also affect the reproductive system as well. This could decrease the blood supply to the uterus and also make it harder for the egg to implant there.

The good news

It’s not all bad news however! The study showed that women with asthma did not have a smaller chance of getting pregnant, they had the same chance as women without asthma. The only difference was the women with asthma did have to try longer before getting pregnant.

As long as you are taking your medicine on a regular basis and continuing to try to get pregnant, you shouldn’t have a problem. Just stay consistent and keep trying.

What to remember

If you are struggling to get pregnant and you also suffer from asthma, make it a point to talk to your doctor about whether or not asthma could be making things more difficult for you. Your doctor might be able to recommend another treatment option that could really help you and make it easier for you to get pregnant. Don’t be afraid to ask, and see what your doctor can recommend for you.
