She is now a living example of why preventative medicine is so important these days. That is because Angelina recently underwent a double mastectomy as a preventative measure after finding out that she had extremely high risk factors for breast cancer.
Once Angelina found out that she carries a mutation of the BRCA 1 gene, which dramatically ups a woman’s chances of developing breast cancer, she knew that getting the mastectomy done was the only way to take away that constant worry and fear out of her life once and for all. In an article explaining her decision, Jolie wrote:
“My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman. Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy.”
While some women might be shocked that it was so easy for Angelina to make such a dramatic and drastic choice, she doesn’t see it that way. After losing her mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand to ovarian cancer when she was only 56, back in 2007, Angelina knows now what going through that process is like, and she would never want to subject her loved ones to the kind of pain she went through after losing her mom.
Angie is now 37, so thinking about the future is a big deal, since she is getting closer to the age that her mother was when she passed away.
On April 27, Jolie finished up more than three months worth of treatments, surgeries and doctor’s visits. She had both of her breasts removed, and then got implants and had her chest reconstructed. She now is free from living with that constant fear and worry that she will have to go through breast cancer and that her children will have to deal with that pain as well.
Angelina and partner Brad Pitt were very careful to make sure that Angie had time to recover and rest up before going public with her story. The couple made early morning trips to the doctors, and used untraceable rental cars so that no one would see them going to these visits.
It looks like the decisions paid off. No one found out their secret, and Angie was able to make the announcement on her own terms. We applaud her for her bravery, and hope that her efforts will help women everywhere to find out more about their own breast cancer risks.
