Weight gain

Junk food has been proven to be really bad for pregnant ladies mainly because they will make you gain unnecessary weight. If you gain excessive weight, your baby will be at health risks. She may be born with a smaller head and low birth weight. Do you really want to risk that? Surely not.

French fries and potato chips

You may be wondering why this happens. You may be wondering why eating potato chips and French fries is so bad during pregnancy. Well, recent studies have discovered the reason for you. Apparently there is a chemical called acrylamide that does all the harm. It has been found to be produced naturally in junk foods that have starch. When starch-laden foods are fried or baked at very high temperatures, this chemical is formed. This chemical is found in numerous foods that are processed as well as made at home including potato chips, cookies, doughnuts, and toasted bread. Surprise: it is found in coffee too!

A study was carried out in which 1,100 pregnant women in Europe were examined. Their diets were watched closely and after the pregnancy, the birth weights of the baby were compared to find out results. Apparently, women who consumed acrylamide had babies with lower birth rate. In fact, the weight was 3.5 ounces less than normal. The circumference of the head was also found to be smaller.

Premature birth

You may disregard these numbers because you think they are small but mind you, these can make a huge difference especially if you have had a premature birth. Did you know that a small head might be linked to delayed development of the nervous system of your baby? Did you know that low birth weight could be linked to numerous health issues for your baby throughout her life? Are you willing to take that risk?

Low birth weight

Researchers have actually been baffled by the chances of low birth weight of babies born to mothers eating junk food. They found it so significant that they compared it to babies born to smoking mothers! The researchers have firmly established that indeed acrylamide affects the health of babies and must not be taken during pregnancy. Thus, you must avoid junk food.

Junk food was never good for you. It only tastes delicious but that doesn’t mean you risk your baby’s health to satisfy your cravings. If you want to have junk food, eat something else that you find equally yummy. Surely there are a few things that you like a lot, which are safe and healthy. Go for them. Avoid junk food completely during pregnancy and if you can, you should eliminate junk food from your diet completely even after pregnancy.
