Omega-3 fatty acids are one of several types of “good fats” that our bodies need. Omega-3′s are known as essential fatty acids, because they are, well, essential to human health. This means that we have to have them in order for our bodies to work properly. Omega-3′s are unable to be produced by the body, so we have to get them from food sources (or nutritional supplements).
Omega-3′s come from a variety of different sources. One of the best sources of Omega-3′s is seafood. The very best sources come from cold water, oily fish such as salmon, herring, anchovies, and sardines. This is because what we really need out of the fish is the fish oil, so the oilier, the better! You can also get Omega-3′s from flaxseed or krill oil, and sometimes even in meat or eggs. If you don’t get enough Omega-3′s from dietary sources, you can also get some Omega-3′s from a nutritional supplement.
Omega-3′s are great for fertility! Up until recently, doctors really didn’t know how beneficial these fatty acids were, but now, we are seeing that they can do great things for fertility. One of the most important things that Omega-3′s do is regulate hormones in the body. When hormones are regulated, it is easier to get pregnant. Omega-3′s can also help in other ways as well. Omega-3′s help a baby’s central nervous systems as well as circulatory systems to grow and develop normally. Also, studies have shown that babies whose mother’s got sufficient amounts of Omega-3′s while pregnant were actually smarter, and had better cognitive development.
