The long wait

For many couples, the longest part of the fertility journey is actually getting to the point where you can be considered to be infertile by medical standards. For women under 35, that wait is considered to be one year of trying to get pregnant with no success. For women over age 35, the wait is shorter, only six months from the time you start trying to get pregnant until you should see a doctor if you are not having success.

First steps

The first step in determining if you are infertile, is usually a visit to your family doctor. Your family doctor can take a look at your family history and your health issues and determine if it is possible that you have a fertility problem. Your doctor might have additional insight into things you can do to improve your fertility before going on to a fertility specialist. If it is warranted, your doctor will probably refer you onto a fertility or reproductive specialist.

Seeing a specialist

Most couples are very nervous about seeing a fertility specialist, but they are often surprised that it is not as bad as they might think. The first few visits with a fertility specialist are usually all about testing and planning for the future. Your fertility doctor will probably do a complete family history and perhaps a physical for both male and female partners. Your fertility specialist will probably also do some blood work and run some laboratory tests for you to help determine what is happening in your body.

Checking everything out

Your first few trips to the fertility specialist will most likely include blood tests to check your FSH levels to determine how your ovaries are working. Then a test called a hysterosalpingogram might be performed to determine if your fallopian tubes are working correctly. This test is just an xray of the uterine cavity, and is not as intimidating as it sounds. Finally, your doctor will probably want to do a semen analysis on your partner to find out whether or not his sperm is performing properly. All of these things will be part of the initial fertility workup and will help your fertility specialist determine what course of treatment is right for you.
