When a woman has high blood pressure while she is pregnant, especially early on in a pregnancy, special care is required. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the pregnancy is in danger. When high blood pressure appears during a pregnancy, there are many issues that it may cause. For example, it can decrease the amount of blood flow that flows to the placenta. This could mean that the baby is not getting enough oxygen, which can lead to low birth weight and slow growth.
Another complication that can occur is placental abruption. This is caused when the placenta separates from the uterus before the baby is ready to be delivered. This condition can cause heavy bleeding as well as damage to the placenta. This is something that can be life threatening for both mother and baby.
Some women with high blood pressure also find that they need to deliver the baby early. At these times, this is the best way to ensure that the baby is healthy and that there are no life threatening complications for the mother during the delivery process.
