While flax oil is beneficial for many, many body processes, many people wonder if it is helpful or harmful during pregnancy.
Flax oil, also sometimes known as flaxseed oil is a very popular health supplement. Flaxseed oil contains essential Omega 3 fatty acids, as well as Omega 6 fatty acids. These extremely healthy fatty acids are found in very few foods, so tons of people turn to flax oil to get their share of these important nutrients. Flax oil has so very many benefits, from reducing cancer risk, to helping with healthy skin, hair and nails, to even burning body fat, believe it or not. There is a huge debate in the health care community over whether or not flax oil is safe during pregnancy. Some doctors say that it is okay, and other doctors urge their patients to never, ever use it during pregnancy. Since the US Food and Drug Administration does not regulate herbal supplements, they are not subjected to the same rigorous testing and standards as most other foods or drugs. However, at this point the results are inconclusive so you will have to make your own judgments about whether or not you think flax oil is safe during pregnancy.
There is no denying that flax oil does have some real benefits to a pregnancy. Before flax oil was thought to be potentially risky, many doctors were actually recommending it to their patients. Flax oil is said to help with brain development in unborn babies. Babies who don’t get enough of the important Omega 3′s are thought to be at a greater risk for low birth weight and low head circumference. Flax oil can also help with the production of DHA, which is very important for baby’s development.
While originally thought to be safe during pregnancy, recently doctors have begun to think that perhaps flax oil is not safe during pregnancy after all. Even though flax oil is considered “natural,” that doesn’t mean that it is completely safe. Some studies indicate that women who take flax oil have a 12 percent greater risk of preterm birth than women who do not. Flax oil can also increase your estrogen levels, so that is something to be aware of. If you are wondering about flax oil during your pregnancy, make sure to talk with your doctor and get all the information before making your decision one way or another.
