Female Fertility Testing

If you're struggling to get pregnant, find out the most common of the many tests that can be performed for infertility as part of a complete fertility work up.

What are fertility tests?

Fertility tests are tests that can help to determine what a particular fertility problem may be. If a couple has been trying to have a baby for one year or more with no success, they should think about going to see a fertility specialist for a complete fertility workup with all the necessary testing. If a woman is over 35, she might want to think about going in for fertility testing after only six months. There are several fertility tests that fertility specialists will want to do at a initial work up, and today we are going to talk about a few of those popular tests. Family history

One of the first tests that a fertility specialist will do is a complete family history. A family history will be done on both the male and female partners. Your doctor will ask about family history of any diseases or conditions that run on either side of the family. Your doctors will also ask about past pregnancies, birth control, menstrual periods, medications both past or present, current and past sexual partners, and more. You should be completely open and honest with your fertility specialist so that your doctor can help determine the best treatment for you.

Complete physical

Your doctor will also want to do a complete physical, including a pelvic exam. Your doctor will be able to see if there are any signs of physical problems, and a pelvic exam can sometimes give a big clue into potential fertility issues. If you have any physical problems or symptoms, make sure to tell your doctor, so you can have additional testing done if needed.

Ovulation evaluations

One of the first things a fertility specialist will want to do is check to see if you are ovulating properly. Your doctor will want to test to make sure that ovulation is occurring and that every thing is working smoothly. You will probably already have ovarian function tests performed too to make sure that your ovaries are functioning properly during your ovulation cycle. Your doctor will also want to test the length of your luteal phase as well.

Hormone tests

There are several hormone tests that your doctor will probably want to do to make sure that your hormones are working properly. There are usually tests done on Luteinizing Hormone (LH), Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Estradiol, Progesterone, Prolactin, and Testosterone. These are all very important hormones related to fertility, and your doctor will need to figure out your hormone levels before proceeding with fertility treatments.

Ultrasound tests

Your doctor might also want to do an ultrasound. Usually, ultrasounds are done to check the endometrial lining, and to make sure there is no damage. Ultrasounds can also check the condition of your ovaries, and give doctors a closer look at your uterus. Ultrasounds can also be done to look and see if the egg is being released properly.

Endometrial biopsy

Endometrial biopsies are done to make sure that the endometrial lining is thick enough for an egg to implant and grow. During this procedure, a small amount of the endometrial lining is scraped off and examined. This procedure can not be done on pregnant women, so make sure that there is no chance of pregnancy before proceeding with this test.

These are only a few of many, many tests that can be performed for infertility as part of a complete fertility work up. There are many more tests that your doctor might order, so be prepared for a myriad of tests to help determine what your fertility issues might be.
