Does Smoking Marijuana Affect Pregnancy Test Results?

While doctors and other experts do not recommend the use of marijuana at all, pregnant or not, you can rest assured that marijuana will not influence the results of a home pregnancy test.
There has, however, begun to be some small bit of a shift in the way that marijuana is perceived in our culture today. More and more, marijuana is becoming legalized to use for medicinal purposes, and some states are even starting to legalize marijuana for personal use. The simple fact is that the whole topic of cannabis and marijuana as a whole is being turned on its head in our society today, and things are not what they once were. However, until more studies are done on the long term effects of marijuana, doctors advise pregnant women to stay away from marijuana. But, the question is, how can marijuana influence pregnancy test results?
Of course, marijuana is a drug, and all doctors are going to advise pregnant women to stay away from all drugs while pregnant. While there is not much research on the way marijuana affects pregnant women, doctors would always rather their patients err on the side of caution. However, there is no reason that marijuana should affect pregnancy test results. The active ingredient in marijuana is THC, and that ingredient should in no way affect the outcome of a pregnancy test. Pregnancy tests detect the hormone hCG in the body, and that is the only hormone that they will detect. For that reason, marijuana has not been shown or proven to have an effect on pregnancy test results.
The bottom line on this is that THC and hCG are two VERY distinctly different things. They can not be mixed up or confused for each other. The only thing that can influence the results of a pregnancy test is hormonal medications that contain hCG. Other than those very few medications, pregnancy test results can not be influenced by outside means.
While doctors and other experts do not recommend the use of marijuana at all, pregnant or not, you can rest assured that marijuana will not influence the results of a home pregnancy test. If you are worried about your marijuana use while you are pregnant, talk with your doctor about getting help. He or she should be able to offer you some resources and referrals to get the help that you need to make sure that both you and your baby are safe during pregnancy.
