Ovulation is defined as the period of time in which the mature egg is released from the ovary. The egg is pushed down the fallopian tube and is ready to be fertilized. The lining of the uterus will already be thickened in preparation for a fertilized egg. If the egg is fertilized and conception occurs, a pregnancy will occur and the egg will try to implant. However, if no conception occurs, the egg will not be fertilized, and the thickened uterine lining will be shed, along with the egg. This process is known as menstruation. The egg only lives for 24 to 48 hours after being released, so there is a very short time frame in each month where a woman can possibly become pregnant.
Many women do not realize this, but it is possible to ovulate without having a period. It is also possible to have a period without ovulating. The two are not mutually exclusive, and many women are misinformed about this, and think that you have to have one to have the other. While this is not true, it is MUCH easier to get pregnant when you have regular periods, simply because it is easier to track your cycles and to know when you are approaching your fertile time. However, since the egg is actually released somewhere between 12-16 days before a woman’s expected period, it is technically possible to become pregnant without a period.
If you are not having regular periods due to a medical condition, it is a good idea to see a doctor to make sure that everything is okay, and that you should not have any type of medical treatment for your condition. If you are not having periods and you want to make sure you do not get pregnant, it is important to use birth control, since there is no way to tell when your fertile times are.
