Birth Control Effects on a Fetus

Many times, a woman may forget to take her pill, and she might end up pregnant even though she was on birth control pills. But, what happens then? What are the effects of hormonal birth control pills on the fetus? Is there danger to the unborn baby? What about the mom?

Low chances

Most birth control methods these days are extremely effective. In fact, a woman’s chance of becoming pregnant while on hormonal birth control is between 1 and 2%. However, no one is perfect, and no birth control method is perfect. Many times, a woman may forget to take her pill, and she might end up pregnant even though she was on birth control pills. Very low risk

Most studies have revealed that there is little to no risk to the developing fetus if it is exposed to hormonal birth control pills for a short period of time. Most women realize that they are pregnant very soon after they conceive, so most women do not remain on birth control pills for very long. If you are trying to conceive after stopping birth control pills, most doctors say that it is completely safe to begin trying to conceive as soon as you go off the pill. Some doctors recommend waiting until your menstrual period returns, but most agree that is not necessary.

Ectopic Pregnancy

There is a very small risk that birth control can increase the chances of a tubal or ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy can put the mother in danger, and unfortunately there is no chance of the fetus surviving. The symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy can include lower back pain, dizziness, pelvic pain, abdominal pain, vaginal spotting or bleeding, and headache. If a woman is experiencing these symptoms, she should see a doctor right away, even if she is on birth control and doesn’t think that she could be pregnant.

If you get pregnant on the pill

One thing that many women don’t know is that if they get pregnant while on the pill, they will still experience the same pregnancy symptoms as a woman who is not on birth control. This includes morning sickness, bloating, weight gain, breast tenderness, and all of the other symptoms that come along with pregnancy. This is why most women who get pregnant while on the pill don’t stay on the pill for very long, since they usually realize that they are pregnant right away. If you are on the pill and you think that you might be pregnant, it is important that you seek a doctor’s advice right away, and stop using your pills until you know for sure whether or not you are pregnant.
